In Part I of this series, Pete had discovered he had Peripheral Neuropathy, nerve damage in his feet, over a year ago. His doctor prescribed Neurontin?, and for awhile it worked. But the condition was progressive, and the pain increased. It seemed the drug was having an increasingly difficult time handling it.

Pete wasn?t satisfied that his condition had no cure. He got on the Internet and found out?

Peripheral Neuropathy has a variety of causes (For a more in-depth explanation, see www.neuropathy.org).

These are:

– Immune Related, the most prominent of which is the Guillane-Barre syndrome in which the body’s immune system attacks the Peripheral Nervous System. Weakness in the legs is usually a preliminary sign of this condition.

– Diabetic, caused by excessive blood sugar. This can take the forms of either Peripheral (damage to the extremities) or autonomic (damage to the Central Nervous System).

– Infectious, caused by HIV, Hepatitus or Lyme disease.

– Drug and Nutrition Related. Excessive alcohol consumption can result in a deficiency in thiamine (Vitamin B1) that is essential to the health of the Peripheral Nervous System.

– Hereditary. Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease is an example of hereditary Neuropathy. Nerves in the legs are affected first, followed by those in the feet and ultimately to the hands and arms.

– Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Neuropathy resulting from repetitive damage.

– Critical Illness. Neuropathy can be brought on by attempts to combat cancer, such as chemotherapy.

– Idiopathic. A word for saying that nobody knows what causes it.

And nobody, it seems, knows how to cure it.

TWO ESSENTIALS YOUR NERVES DESPERATELY NEED.

Neuropathy brought about by excessive alcohol consumption is thought to be caused by the reduction of Thiamine, or Vitamin B1, in the body. Thiamine has long been known to be vital to the healthy functioning of nerves and was linked to the disease Beriberi in 1937.

It has long been known that nerves respond to the presence, or absence of Vitamin B1, but only recently, Neuropathy has been shown to also be made worse by the absence of B12 which supports nerve cell sheathing and promotes and regenerates nerve cells.

Unfortunately, both Vitamins B1 and B12 are water soluble complexes that are not retained long in the body. Thiamine is flushed out of the body in 4 – 5 hours, and less than 1/2 of 1% of Vitamin B12 consumed orally is retained. It is almost impossible to get enough of this vitamin, and nerve cells are not protected well without it.

So, is there a possibility that with the proper intake of Vitamins B1 and B12, that damaged nerves can be healed?

There may be gain that kills the pain

Pete was getting scared. The Neurontin? dosage levels weren’t cutting it and the neuropathy was rapidly taking over his feet.

Where was this headed? And, more importantly…

Was there any way to stop it? Was there any actual ? cure — out there? Somewhere?

From his Internet research, Pete learned that there was indeed some ongoing medical research into the role Vitamin B1 played in actually reversing Neuropathy, but little was known.

But then he discovered something. Medical research was focused on water soluble vitamins B1 and B12, vitamins that didn?t remain long enough in the body to do much good.

If somehow they could be retained by the body longer ?

HANG AROUND AND SOMETHING MIGHT HAPPEN.

Pete discovered there was a possibility that Vitamins B1 and B12 could be retained in the body long enough to be therapeutic for nerve damage. It just had to be in an oil soluble form, rather than water soluble.

The term “like dissolves like” has been a maxim of Chemists since the dawn of Chemistry. It has long been known that chemicals can be divided into two classes: polar and non-polar. The former are generally water soluble, and the latter are oil soluble.

Oil soluble materials are taken up by the body and retained longer than the polar, water soluble, chemicals.

A new form of Vitamin B1, known as Benfotiamine, has been discovered to be retained in the body much longer than Thiamine, and Methalcobalamine, known as Methyl B12, is also retained longer and is effective for nerve repair.

Packaged together they may provide a real alternative for Peripheral Neuropathy sufferers, particularly those with Neuropathy symptoms in their hands and feet.

SOMETHING MORE?

Pete needed something more than pain management. He needed something that would actually therapeutically work to “heal” his condition, but he couldn’t find it in conventional medicine.

All available drugs did little more than to block or “manage” the pain, and as time went by and Pete’s condition worsened, they were having steadily more difficulty doing that.

Vitamin therapies exist which offered promise…but Pete was reluctant to try them. He was locked into the notion that any “alternative” solution to a medical problem was somewhere in that hazy world of medical quackery…

And he didn?t fully realize that alternate therapies were relegated to ?quackery? by an industry dependent on pharmaceutical companies whose business economy depends on increasing the public?s drug dependence….not true therapy.

But alternate solutions do work, and without the side effects conventional pharmaceuticals usually produce.

Vitamin therapies, based on oil soluble B complexes, are known to have a powerful role in healing damaged nerve cells without side effects, are based on sound medical principles ?that provide bright hope for healing Peripheral Neuropathy.

The focus of Ethics and the Internet (E&I) are on us rather than on the technology itself. At great human and economic cost, resources drawn from governments, industry and the academic communities have been assembled into a collection of interconnected networks called the Internet. Begun as a vehicle for experimental network research in the mid-1970’s, the Internet has become an important national infrastructure supporting an increasingly widespread, multi-disciplinary community of researchers ranging, from computer scientists and electrical engineers, to mathematicians, medical researchers, astronomers and space scientists.

As is true of other common infrastructures (e.g., roads, water reservoirs and delivery systems, and the power generation and distribution network), there is widespread dependence on the Internet by its users for the support of day-to-day activities. The reliable operation of the Internet, and the responsible use of its resources, is of common interest and concern for its users, operators and sponsors. Network infrastructures underscore the need to reiterate the professional responsibility every Internet user bears to colleagues and to the sponsors of the system. Abuse of the system thus, becomes a matter above and beyond simple professional ethics.

Information means power. This old maxim has become more and more pertinent in our modern information society. The development of information technology has been dashing and, if future predictions are anything to go by, the pace of change will only increase. Ethical and moral issues in computer ethics and are among the most vital social aspects of information technology. But, there are currently two major problems in the area. First, inconsistent moral behavior, leading to immoral acts such as virus creation and capital theft and second, lack of awareness concerning information technology security and IT-related crimes. Not even IT experts have an adequate knowledge of computer ethics, though there is every indication that ethics should be a part of their professional baggage. As for the development of ethical skills, it is not just a matter of education; rather, it is an on-going process that every professional should be aware of.

Educational institutions play an important role in this respect. In addition to imparting technical knowledge, they should also teach computer ethics. Educational issues and ethical awareness are important as they provide the motivation for complying with learned ethical principles. Ethical decision-making formulas and applicable theories are helpful for sharing information about the application of ethics. This information can then be disseminated by educational institutions. Professionals must have the capability to make broad-minded, objective ethical decisions based on know-how. They also have to do their level best to create a working environment and atmosphere where ethical dilemmas can be discussed openly, objectively and constructively.

We all have done it at one time or another.

When short of listings, the Realtor goes out and ?buys’ one. The process of buying a listing is as old as Real Estate itself. The agent shows up at someone’s doorsteps and inflates the value of the property by more than $30,000, $40,000 or even $50,000 over and above the actual market value. I know of agents who have actually listed properties for $200,000 more than what those properties were in fact worth. The owner happily signs the listing agreement with those dollar signs sparking right in the eyes, and the Realtor happily sticks up a sign right in the front lawn. Of course the house subsequently does not sell because it is overpriced, but it doesn’t really matter.

Or does it?

All the way back in 1988, in a legal case entitled Basic Inc. v. Levinson, the United States Supreme Court endorsed a theory known as ?fraud on the market’, which in turn relies on another theory known in Economics as the Efficient Market Hypothesis. The Efficient Market Hypothesis postulates that prices of traded assets like stocks, bonds, or real property, already reflect all known information and therefore are unbiased in the sense that they reflect the collective beliefs of all investors about the value of the underlying asset and enable investors, therefore, to assess future prospects.

In essence the Efficient Market Hypothesis, which was developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s, states that subject to certain conditions the market price of a traded asset fully and accurately reflects all the available information relevant to its value. Under this Hypothesis, in an efficient market the only reason as to why a price changes is that new information comes to light.

Because market prices reflect all available information about an asset, reasoned the Supreme Court, misleading statements as to the integrity of price will affect and negatively impact the decision-making process of investors, who rely on those statements as the primary guide to finalize a purchase. Which is tantamount to ?intentional deceit’, more vulgarly known as … fraud.

That ruling has proven a goldmine for American trial lawyers, who have won fortunes by suing firms for damages when new financial information, often in practice a restatement of their balance sheets, is followed by a sharp fall in stock prices of the same firms. The fall is treated as proof of overvaluation due to the initial, wrong statements.

This decision of America’s highest Court has now crossed the border with Canada and has spilled into Real Estate. A case involving a Seller, a Buyer and a Real Estate Agent acting in a position of dual agency is now pending in front of the Supreme Court of Ontario. The Agent first grossly overvalued the subject property at the time he took the listing, then actually found a Purchaser ready, willing and able to buy at a price close the grossly inflated asking price. As the transaction was being financed through an institutional lender, the underlying case initially also involved an appraisal firm, which subsequently has settled out of Court with the disgruntled Purchaser.

The decision of the Supreme Court will have an enormous impact on how real estate is practiced in Ontario and possibly throughout the whole country, and it will be interesting to see what the outcome will be. The Buyer bases his case on the Efficient Market Hypothesis arguing that he reached the decision to purchase on the integrity of the asking price and claims, furthermore, that the dual Agent knew or should have know that the asking price was grossly over and above the market value of the subject property. The Buyer is claiming damages both as against the Agent and the Seller.

The line of defence is that the true meaningful value of an interest in land is given by its ?objective value’, defined as the price that the property will fetch in an open and fair market, given sufficient time to find a Purchaser, the amount of advertising involved in the marketing of the property, the relationship between the parties and the terms of financing. The additional argument of the defence is that the truthfulness of the Efficient Market Hypothesis is actually being disputed by Economists even in its original field of application: the Stock Market. More specifically, the defence argues that even highly developed financial markets such as the New York Stock Exchange are not efficient enough to allow Courts to calculate the financial damages caused by fraud, and that estimates of damages based on the Hypothesis will be necessarily overstated.

The Realtor in particular contends, furthermore, that at no time the thought of earning a double commission ever crossed his innocent mind (he was walking the dog one day and …).

All of which goes to prove once again the point I have been making for years – that is sellers, buyers, realtors, lawyers and judges invariably make an explosive mix.

It seems like everytime you turn your head, you’re hearing more and more about the african hoodia cactus.

This is not surprising considering it’s been covered on CBS’s 60 Minutes, the Today Show, the BBC, by Oprah, and even more.

The aim of this article will be to give you a broad overview of this amazing plant, some history, and what research has revealed so far with respect to its ability to facilitate weight loss.

History of Hoodia

First, let’s first address one point straightaway. Even though everyone calls it the African hoodia cactus, it’s really not a cactus at all; rather, it belongs to the succulent family. To be sure, however, it resembles a cactus and that’s why most everyone refers to it as such.

In addition, there are dozens of hoodia plant, but only the hoodia gordonii species harbors a seemingly magical active ingredient that tricks the brain into thinking its full and, therefore, assists with weight loss.

Hoodia gordonii was discovered literally thousands of years ago by a tribe of hunter-gatherers called the Sans Bushmen who roam the Kalahari Desert of Southern Africa.

The Sans used the african hoodia cactus for millennia to suppress their appetite and thirst because they would embark on hunting trips, during which they often had to endure long periods of time with no food or water.

Eating the hoodia gordonii plant, they discovered, quelled the pangs from hunger and thirst.

For thousands of years this amazing plant and its active ingredient remained a secret until the mid 90’s when the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) an organization in South Africa, was conducting a study on the indigenous diet of the Sans.

They were actually testing the foods consumed by the Sans for toxicity, but when they tested hoodia gordonii, they found that not only was it not toxic; it helped diminish the appetite of animals it was fed to.

After more research, they isolated the active ingredient that suppresses the appetite, and called it P57.

Soon thereafter, the media got wind of this amazing ancient plant and the floodgates were opened: the long held secret of the Sans Bushmen was a secret no more.

Having read this very brief history of hoodia, you’ll note that the Sans do not use it for weight loss but rather to mitigate hunger and thirst urges when faced with a lack of food and water.

However, because obesity is such a large and growing threat in the Western world it was logically concluded that if people could be made to consume less calories, the hoodia gordonii plant could be a boon to the weight loss dreams of millions of people.

Nowadays it seems everyone who even has 10 lbs to shed wants to lose weight with african hoodia cactus.

What do the Studies Reveal?

Other than the studies done by CSIR, a pharmaceutical company called Phytopharm conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with the hoodia gordonii extract P57 with morbidly obese participants.

The results were shocking: the participants who were using the hoodia gordonii P57 extract ended up consuming on average a 1,000 less calories per day than the control group. They also experienced a significant reduction in bodyfat and no negative side effects.

These are astounding results considering your average man consumes approximately 2,500 – 3,000 calories per day and your typical woman consumes about 1,500 to 2,000 calories per day in the Western world.

The results of the study sent shockwaves through the diet industry and companies began popping up everywhere offering hoodia based products.

Now that you know a brief history of hoodia, your next step is to avoid getting scammed by the plethora of phony hoodia products that have flooded the market and learn how to pick products made with authentic hoodia gordonii.

Each year hospitals end up killing twice as many people than automobiles, some 90,000 deaths in the United States. It is not from malpractice, it is due to infections. Hospital infections affect over 2 million patients every year. Scientists are working to prevent these infections one of the newest innovations is silver nano-particles. Microscopic anti-microbial coated nano-particles would be used to keep the infections at bay. Tools used in surgery would be coated with these particles, along with perhaps rubber gloves. One of the companies working on this scheme is AcryMed, which makes surgical devices in Portland, Oregon.

Almost any medical device, which is used in surgery or pokes thru the skin are potentially at risk to spread deadly infections. Deadly microbes can live on biofilms or thin layers of slimy biomaterial so small that they cannot be seen without a microscope. If someone is infected it could cost over $50,000 to keep them in the hospital to treat them, obviously the return on investment to sterilize and coat the surgery utensils makes sense. Silver has been used to treat infections throughout time and there are ancient writings of its use in both Greek and Roman writings.

Recently another coating technology has come onto the scene, the use of titanium dioxide, which is being used on laboratory counters, fast food restaurant stainless steel food preparation tables and on military equipment in case of chemical or biological attack. A silver based wound ointment is an obvious use for this technology as well, for military medics and first responders. These coatings are relatively easy to apply using similar hydrophobic methods used in glass coatings to prevent water spots and make them chip resistant. Think on this and all its potential applications.

Let’s take a look at some other popular beliefs about acne to dispel any other rumors; for example, stress. Is it true that increased stress spreads acne? Not exactly. What is true is that ultimately stress can have a very minimal or minor influence all by itself. It cannot actually cause acne, but it can influence reoccurrences of acne as stress increases the body’s creation of a substance called cortisol that in turn causes your sebaceous glands to produce increased amounts of sebum oil that can be blocked in pores. Note, however, that some medications people take when trying to deal with or treat stress can have a large influence on acne as the result of medication side effects.

Acne is contagious, true or false? Not! No one can “catch” acne; it is non-communicable.

You’ll outgrow acne, so just leave it along; myth or truth? This is false. Acne strikes all ages and is treatable, but shouldn’t be left alone to possibly worsen.

Being out in the sun helps acne, right? In the long run, no. The sun may appear to help clear up your blemishes and redden your skin, thus lessening the overall reddish effect of the targeted acne area when it was outstanding. However, rays from the sun can cause skin damage and actually irritate skin more, worsening any existing acne problems in the process and clogging more pores as skin cells dry up and slough off quicker than normal. So use caution (and sunscreen) here!

Sweating helps clean out your hair follicle areas, myth or reality? Another myth. In reality, strenuous activity can temporarily increase your body’s oil production that can actually worsen acne problem areas, causing recurrence or intensification.

Acne problems are directly proportionate to sexual activity, or lack thereof; true or false? False, another myth. Just because teenagers are going through hormonal changes, does not mean that this has anything to do with acne. Both are separate issues. Same with adult acne and sex; two entirely different issues.

People with acne are dirty and don’t wash enough. Not! This is another myth. Acne is the result of a build up of oil, dead skin cells and bacteria in a closed pore. Period. Dirt is not even a factor in the equation.

Acne is only on external issue or surface deep; i.e. people shouldn’t make such a big thing out of it, myth or reality? Myth. In reality, yes, it basically is only on your skin (and underneath the surface a little bit). However, the effects run much more deeper than that in many instances. More than 50 percent of those suffering acne problems reported negative comments and other feedback from members of society, regardless of whether or not there was any scarring left for others to see afterwards. And resulting internal depression and low self-esteem can be harmful emotionally not only short-term but over a person’s lifetime. So acne can indeed be a very big issue requiring healthcare treatment and support.

OK, myth or reality: there is a cure for acne? Myth. Although there is no cure at this time, there are many treatments available that do a great job. As the saying goes, “Prevention is the best medicine;” however, there is no need to suffer in silence with all the options available on the market today for all price ranges.

Certain cosmetics or spot treatments will help acne, myth or reality? Myth again. By the time a blemish appears, it has been in the works for a good couple of weeks.

Myth or not: people with acne should not use moisturizers or other make-up products on their faces? Myth! Today there are many noncomedogenic cosmetics out there specially formulated to NOT clog pores.

In order to live and enjoy your lifestyle to the full, you need to be fit and healthy. And you want to look good. I am going to give you a couple of fitness programs (below) you can use if you feel like it and think it’s appropriate for your goals.

By becoming more flexible, stronger and having a fitter cardiovascular system, you look better, feel better, move better and can have more fun for a longer period of time.

Life, after all, should be about having fun. Read on to start your journey towards a better, healthier life.

1. Flexibility

Here is a daily routine you can follow to increase your flexibility and loosen up your muscles and joints. This can prevent injuries, aches and pains and generally makes movement easier. Do these stretches every morning and before working out. Do not bounce when you stretch and hold the stretch for 30 seconds.

Daily Stretching Routine:

Forearm stretch 1 – Hold your arm out in front of you with your palm down then use your other hand to stretch the top of your hand back towards your face. Then swap arms.

Forearm stretch 2 – Hold your arm out in front of you with your palm down then use your other hand to stretch it back towards your stomach. Then swap arms.

Calf stretch – Flex your foot towards you as far as you can. Place your fully flexed foot against a wall or pole and gently lean forward to stretch the calf and achilles tendon.

Thoracic stretch – Clasp your hands behind your back. Now tighten up your back muscles backwards and downwards stretching your hands towards the floor.

Lumbar roll – Lie on your back on the floor. Extend your right arm out along the floor perpendicular to your body. Bend your right knee up so the foot is in line with your left knee. Now grab your right knee with your left hand and pull it across your body . Keep your right arm on the floor at all times. Then do the opposite side (left arm on floor, left knee pulled across body with right hand).

Posterior deltoid stretch – Hold your arm out in front of you with the palm up. Then pull the arm across your body to stretch the rear of your shoulder. Then do the other side.

Tricep, upper side and deltoid stretch – Extend your arm straight up with your palm facing backwards. Then bend your arm at the elbow to place your palm on your upper back. Grab your elbow with your other hand and pull it so as to move your palm on your back downwards. Then do the other side.

Anterior deltoid stretch – Hang your arm sraight down at your side with your palm facing backwards. Bend your arm at the elbow to stretch your arm up behind your back towards your head. Now grab your elbow with your other hand and pull it towards the middle of your back. Then do the other side.

Quadricep stretch – Stand on one leg and bend the other leg at the knee up behind you. Grab your foot with your hands and pull up. Then do the other side.

Hamstring and back stretch – Sit down on the floor with your legs out in front of you. Lean forward and grab your toes pulling them back towards you. Now tuck your head in so your chin touches your chest. Then lean forward until your forehead touches your shins.

Lower side stretch – Stand with yourarms at your side. Then stretch one arm over the top of your head. Now push the other arm down your leg. Then do the other side.

Pectoral and bicep stretch – Reach your arms back behind you grabbing the insides of a door frame with your palms facing out. Lean forward.

2. Losing Weight and Cardiovascular Fitness

WARNING: Before you undertake any fitness program, consult your doctor.

To lose fat and improve the fitness of your heart and cardiovascular system you need low intensity exercise for 30 minutes a day 3 times a week.

Walking is the best cardiovascular exercise. To choose the right intensity, here is the rule. You want to walk fast enough so that you are not happy about it but you should still be able to hold a conversation with someone while you are doing it. If you are too puffed to talk or if your muscles start burning, you are working too hard. Here’s why -

You have three energy systems in your body. This explanation can get a bit technical but bear with me. Muscles are fuelled by a chemical called ATP. There are three ways your body can make ATP.

If you pick up a ball and throw it, your body converts creatine phosphate stored in your muscles into ATP. This is very fast but runs out quickly. You then need to rest for a moment or so before you can pick up another ball and throw it at maximum velocity.

If you are lifting weights or running, your body converts glycogen (which is the stored version of carbohydrates also stored in your muscles) into ATP. This is a fast process but not as fast as creatine conversion. This process gives you energy to the muscles for a moderate period of time. The byproduct produced by this process is lactic acid. This is what causes your muscles to burn. Lactic acid annoys your nerve endings whilst it is waiting to be drained by your lymphatic system out of your muscles.

If you go for a long walk your body initially converts glycogen while you are warming up and then converts fat to ATP to power muscles. Burning fat requires the presence of oxygen. It is an aerobic process. Burning creatinine and glycogen does not require the presence of oxygen. They are anaerobic processes. If you are trying to lose fat it is important to warm up slowly so you don’t produce lactic acid faster than you can dispose of it out of your muscles. Then you must exercice at low intensity to use your aerobic energy production system. You then burn fat and because you don’t have lactic acid building up in your muscles you can exercise longer which will strengthen your heart, lungs and the rest of your cardiovascular system. A strong and healthy cardiovascular system gives you greater endurance.

If you are uncomfortable walking around the block, get yourself a treadmill, then you can walk in front of the TV. This is what I do because walking is so boring. Boring but life saving.

3. Building Muscle

Before you start lifting weights you have to decide what your goals are. What do you want to achieve? Do you want to increase your strength? Do you want to build up your muscles like a bodybuilder? Do you want to increase the endurance of your muscles? Or, do you want to increase your muscle tone?

I hate that term ‘muscle tone’, but it is commonly used. Your muscles are always toned, if they weren’t you would collapse in a heap. But I know what you mean. ‘Toning’ your muscles requires you to build them larger and to remove the fat from on top of them so they are more defined.

If you want greater strength you lift heavier weights for less repititions. You choose a weight that you can lift approximately 6 times before you can’t lift it anymore. You want to do 3 sets of 6 repititions per exercise.

A quick but important word on breathing. This is important. When you contract the muscle you are working on breath in. It should take you 2 seconds (or the count of “1 and 2 and”) to fully contract the muscle when you breath in. When you lower the weights you breath out. It should take you 3 seconds (or the count of “1 and 2 and 3 and”) to fully lower the weight when you breath out. Whatever your goal, this is the breathing pattern and the speed at which you lift weights. Do not go any faster if you want maximum results.

If you want to build the size of your muscles to their fullest you lift moderate weights for approximately 10 repititions. You want to choose a weight that you can’t lift anymore on rep 10. Again you want to do 3 sets per exercise.

If you want to build muscular endurance you lift light weights for approximately 15 repititions. You choose a weight that you can’t lift anymore on rep 15. Again do 3 sets per exercise.

I will give you a basic weight lifting routine below but it is vitally important that you go to a gym and talk to a personal trainer about how to fine tune this basic routine to your circumstances and also to get the trainer to show you the correct form to use when lifting the weights. Poor form leads to poor results and injuries. If you then want to set up your own home gym after you are comfortable that you know what you are doing, that’s fine, but get professional advice on your form as well.

Your basic weight lifting routine – do this 3 times a week leaving a full day at least between workouts.

Bench press – for building the chest (pectorals) primarily and the triceps (on the upper arm facing behind you) and anterior deltoids (front shoulders) secondarily.

Chins – for building the back (latissimus dorsi) primarily and the biceps (on the upper arm facing the front) and lower pectorals secondarily. This is also great for the grip.

Military press – for building the anterior deltoids primarily and the triceps secondarily.

Lateral side raises – for building the medial deltoids (side of the shoulders).

Posterior deltoid raises – for building the posterior deltoids (rear of the shoulders) and the upper back.

Bicep curls – for building the biceps.

Tricep extensions – for building the triceps.

Crunches – for building the abdominal muscles.

Squats – for building the quadriceps (front of upper leg) primarily but also works the back and buttocks.

Hamstring curls – for building the hamstrings (rear of upper leg).

Calf raises – for building the calf muscles (rear of lower leg).

This routine is a basic start that will build a balanced physique. It is vitally important though with weight training that you talk to a trainer and have them show you the correct form or you will hurt yourself. I have deliberately not given you explanations on how to do these exercises for that very reason.

4. Healthy Diet

The key to building muscle, burning fat and remaining healthy is to eat frequent small meals (6 per day). Eating frequent small meals keeps a constant flow of nutrients to growing muscles and keeps your metabolism high which helps to burn fat. A high metabolism means that you burn more fat whilst resting.

To lose weight remember you need to burn more calories than you take in through food. To gain weight in the form of lean muscle you need to take in more calories through lean quality food than you burn. You may also want to consider supplementation as well.

Your meals should be high in lean protein (chicken, fish and lean red meat), with moderate amounts of fruits and vegetables (the more variety of colors the better) and low amounts of fat. You do need fat to be healthy but you should try to get it from olive oil, fish and avocados. You will also get fat from the lean red meat no matter how lean it is.

Stay away from take away foods, snack foods, refined foods, sugar and alcohol. Some red wine is OK but don’t over do it. If you are feeling a little drunk you had too much.

You may have heard the saying “everything is OK in moderation”. Remember, crap is still crap, even in moderation. Every time you eat rubbish you move yourself further away from achieving your goals and make it harder for yourself.

If you are going to use supplementation to assist your efforts consult a professional health food store or pharmacy.

If you snore, surgery should be a last resort when searching for a cure. There are many treatment options for snoring, but it can sometimes be difficult determining which ones work the best for your particular situation. If you have a willing partner, you should ask them to try and notice any change in your snoring. If you live alone you can tape a portion of your sleep each evening to try and determine if the treatment is having any success.

Your doctor may prescribe you drugs to deal with your snoring. There are three different categories for medications working to reduce and/or eliminate snoring. One type is designed to stimulate respiration, the second works to keep airways open, and finally the third works to prevent REM sleep. Taking the last type of drug is perhaps not a good idea for all snorers since REM sleep is important to our health and wellbeing.

Decongestant inhalers can help to reduce excess mucus in your nasal airways. Most of these are available over the counter and can be a real help for some snorers. When looking for sprays consider starting with a saline spray since even this can help to reduce vibrations.

If you don?t want to take any sort of medication for your snoring there are other options. One such potential solution is a pillow that forces you to sleep on your side. Most people only snore when they are lying on their backs, and so this can help to reduce snoring. If the pillow isn?t your thing you can purchase a snore ball which is placed into a pocket in the back of your night shirt, thus preventing you from lying on your back.

If you want to sleep on your back but would prefer to avoid any device that forces you, you may want to consider a sleep position monitor. The monitor works by giving out a beep when you turn onto your back. This may sound annoying but eventually you should be able to remove the monitor once you are used to always sleeping on your side.

Nasal strips are another non surgical option. When used over the top of the nose they can help to widen airways and reduce obstructions which can result in snoring. Another option is the nasal dilator which inserts into your nose and also helps to keep nasal passages open.

Other than these non surgical solutions which work to treat the symptoms, you should try and determine what the cause is. For instance, if you have an intolerance or allergy to milk, it can inflame mucus membranes and increase mucus production, thus increasing your chance for snoring.

You may also want to look at your weight. Many obese people snore due to increased pressure around the neck. Losing weight has many benefits; eliminating snoring is just one if them. If you drink frequently before bed you should also consider cutting it out since it can have an effect on snoring.

The eye can be examined with relative ease as to both its function and its structure. A functional examination includes the ability to move in the orbit and the reaction of the pupil to light and accommodation.

The function of the eye may be tested in several ways. The patient may be asked to identify illuminated letter or objects of varying sizes on what is known as the Snellen chart.

Conversely, the examination of the structural part of the eye may be made in several ways. Tension within the eyeball is measured by a ?tonometer.? In certain diseases, especially in glaucoma, the tension in the eyeball is increased markedly.

However, it should be well remembered that a patient with an eye problem might have other problems as well. Often other physical conditions are primary and affect the eye as a consequence. The appearance of the eye can alert the patient and the physician to difficulties in some disturbances of other parts of the body even before other symptoms present themselves.

Consequently, one?s dependence on sight is emphasized when one faces a temporary or possible permanent loss of this vital sense. Hence, when corrective measures are sought, certain forms of vision correction such as contact lenses or eyeglasses are prescribed.

On the other hand, some people are bothered with the fact that they have some framed lenses or contact lenses in front of their eyes.

For this reason, advanced surgical operations were established to encourage decreased utilization of contact lenses or glasses. One of which is the now popular LASIK eye surgery.

Basically, LASIK eye surgery is the short term for ?Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.? Like its tangible counterpart, LASIK eye surgery is another form of vision correction. The only difference is that with this type of surgery, one?s vision is corrected permanently.

With LASIK eye surgery, the refractive errors in the cornea are permanently transformed. This can be done using an ?excimer laser.?

The main purpose of this surgery is to create a threadlike, rounded ?flap? in the cornea using a blade known as ?microkeratome.? In a series of unfolding and laser processing, the cornea is finally reformed, allowing better the eye to direct more light into the retina.

Popularity vs. Disadvantages

Amidst the growing popularity of LASIK eye surgery, there are still disadvantages that people must know. Probably, the main reason why this type of eye surgery has become well accepted is because most of its cases had been successful.

However, in spite of its success, there are still some drawbacks. Here is the list:

1. It is an operation applied to the most sensitive part of the eye

Because LASIK eye surgery involves the operation of the retina, which is one of the most sensitive portions of the eye, most people say that the operation can be very risky.

In other words, a simple error could almost cause an individual?s lifetime blindness. Hence, it is important to consider many factors before deciding whether LASIK eye surgery is the right corrective measure one has to undergo.

2. It is not a perfect procedure

LASIK eye surgery may correct your vision but it does not necessarily mean that it can give you a perfect vision. Even if statistical reports show that 70% of the patients may have 20/20 vision, this does not necessarily mean they have ideal vision as well.

Given all these things, it can be deduced that, in spite of the popularity of the operation, LASIK may not always be the ideal eye surgery the way most people view it.

I first learned of the nitric oxide pathway through friends? work in the cardiovascular system and the possibility of reversing cardiovascular disease. For them the exciting part was rapid promotions through the academic systems to Chairman of the Department of Medicine in one major University and Director of Cardiovascular Research at yet another.

For me, and my friendship with them, it was a wonderful moment to share with them as they achieved their life?s dream of academic success. For me personally it was the beginning of the use of l-arginine to reverse my personal struggle with cardiovascular disease and continue a long productive career in metabolic medicine. This all culminated in the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998, which recognized the huge potential for health the understanding of the Nitric Oxide (NO) Pathway affords.

My story, ?Dr. Joe, The Uncommon Doctor? www.theuncommondoctor.com tells what this has meant to me so far. I say so far because I will tell you the broadening scope of the power of this pathway and what it means to us all for the future.

Anti-aging is on everyone?s tongue this year as the prime excitement from new research. The reversal of the arterial damage of cardiovascular disease is now recognized as reversal of the aging artery. What else might this involve?

Nothing is firm enough to know for sure but 85 review articles have been published in the last 7 years on the reversal of the following disorders.
?	Cardiovascular disease
?	Cardiomyopathies
? Age in general
?	Hypertension of aging
?	Saving the heart and kidney in disease
?	Anti-inflammatory therapy
?	Reversal of insulin resistance
?	Erectile dysfunction in diabetes
?	Heart failure
?	Brain ageing

All sorts of therapies are being explored that influence the Nitric Oxide Pathway but the use of l-arginine as a ?novel therapy? is being tested in virtually all of these.

I used l-arginine years ago when I was at UCSF to see if it would stimulate growth hormone when given by mouth. It did not. This is good because that means it will only make the eyes better in diabetes, not worse. When given by mouth it will likely help all these conditions.

Most likely, as some of the investigators are trying, we will just have to take a lot more to get all the good aspects of improving the Nitric Oxide Pathway.

Dr. Joe
